Blog #10: Finding an Apartment

Introduction Over the weekend my parents were in town and we decided to take a drive to Caldwell to see Silverhawk and look for a place for me to live when I start flight school in September. Today’s blog will talk about our trip to Caldwell and finding housing. Looking in Caldwell After a half hour of driving to Caldwell from Garden City, we visited Silverhawk Aviation Academy. After looking at the school we drove around town, but we did not see a lot of apartment complexes, so we ultimately decided to drive to Nampa to see how far it would be from Silverhawk. Farmstead Apartments Just three miles down the road from Silverhawk Aviation we found the Farmstead Apartments located on Cherry Lane in Nampa. These apartments are really nice and have just been built in the last couple of years. When we got to the apartments we went on a tour with their lease manager and she told us a lot of good information about the apartments and the amenities they offer. I am looking at moving into one of ...

Blog #9: Steps Before September

Introduction In September I will start my flight school training at Silverhawk Aviation Academy. Today’s blog will go over the steps I need to take to be prepared when I start in September Step 1: Financing Silverhawk is a partner with Sallie Mae Loans. You can visit the Sallie Mae website and fill out an application, in 24 hours you will hear back from them regarding your eligibility to take out loans. When it comes to paying back your loans you can have fixed or variable interests. There are three options you can do while you are going to flight school. Option 1 is to make interest-only payments while in school. Option 2 is to pay a fixed amount each month while in school. Option 3 is to make no payments until after school. I will probably go with option 3 so I do not have to worry about paying anything while I am training.  Step 2: Find Housing After I graduate in May I am going to start looking for housing.  I do not know a lot about Caldwell so I will have to do so...

Blog #8: Deciding What Flight School to Attend

Image
Introduction Today I am traveling back to Boise, Idaho from my hometown Eureka, California. I am currently sitting in the San Francisco airport watching airplanes go by. I can’t help but wonder how cool of an experience it is for a pilot to fly some of these huge planes every day. I am hoping this can be me one day.  Decision Since late January I have been doing constant research on potential flight schools I could attend in the fall. I narrowed down my decisions to 5 different schools. I have written about these different schools in my previous blogs. The flight school I decided to sign up for and apply to is Silverhawk Aviation Academy located in Caldwell, Idaho. I chose Silverhawk for several different reasons. Price One of the biggest factors in deciding to go to Silverhawk was the price. After touring the campus and meeting the owner, I knew I would have the best experience for the price I would be paying for Silverhawk. Silverhawk’s average cost is $75,000.  Locat...

Blog #7: Silverhawk Aviation Academy

Image
Introduction In this week's blog, I will be covering Silverhawk Aviation Academy. Silverhawk is a part 141 school founded in 1998. Part 141 means a flight school must seek and maintain FAA approval for training curriculum, syllabus, and lesson plans, creating a more structured flight training environment. Silverhawk is an independently owned flight school that is not directly affiliated with any major airlines.  Location and Costs Silverhawk Aviation Academy is located in Caldwell, Idaho. Caldwell is only 27 miles from Boise, Idaho. Learning to fly in Idaho provides students with experience in all-around yearly weather conditions. The estimated costs for silver hawk range from $65,000 to $70,000. These prices are not guaranteed but, are based on past student averages. This includes private ratings, and commercial and instrument ratings. Silverhawk provides limited student housing that ranges from $450 to $625 a month. Timeline The average student takes 15 to 21 months to complete a...

Blog #6: UND Aerospace Phoenix

Image
Introduction Hello everyone, I hope your weeks are off to a strong start. This week's blog will be about the University of North Dakota’s Aerospace accelerated flight school program. This program is different from all of the other academies I have talked about in the past. This program is offered through the University of North Dakota. It is not directly tied to an airline. This can be beneficial because they do not make you sign a contract before you start training to work for a certain airline. Once you get your private pilot license, commercial ratings, and 1,500 hours of flight time you can apply to any airline.  Location and Costs The UND Aerospace accelerated program is located in Phoenix, Arizona. The airport where you will be training as a student is the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. The airport is located in the southwest corner of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The unique desert climate of Arizona provides numerous opportunities to complete flight training ahead of...

Blog #5: American Airline Academy

Image
Introduction Welcome back to my journey to flight school. Today’s blog will be about AA Cadet Academy. This is the American Airline's flight academy for hopeful future pilots. At this academy, you will be selected to train at one of the five academy locations. You will have a current American Airlines pilot mentor that will help guide you through the program. After 18 months in the academy, you will have all of your ratings to be qualified to be a certified flight instructor. Location and Costs There is a total of five academy locations for the American Airlines Academy. Each location has slightly different tuition driven by different training aircraft. Although there are different locations American vows that you will receive a consistently high level of training at each location. The price of the program includes materials, uniforms, and all training (for those who maintain satisfactory academic progress). The cost of housing and meals can be added if necessary. Below is a list o...

Blog #4: United Aviate Academy

Image
Introduction In this week's blog, I will review The United Aviate Academy. This academy is United Airlines' main pipeline for hiring future pilots for the company. Unlike Destination 225 and Ascend Pilot Academy which are partnered with CAE trading, Aviate has its own training program. This makes it unique compared to other academies. It is also unique because of its in-class schooling, but we will dive more into detail about that later.  Location and Costs Aviate Academy is located in Goodyear, Arizona. Goodyear Airport provides cadets with industry-leading resources, equipment, and accommodations. The facility is one of only three aviation training campuses in the U.S. The facility covers 28 acres. The facility includes an Administrative and Flight Operations building, cafeteria, dormitories, two aircraft maintenance hangars, a simulator, and a facility maintenance building. Aviate offers on-campus housing ranging from $650 to $750 a month. The total cost of getting your c...
