Blog #8: Deciding What Flight School to Attend



 Introduction

Today I am traveling back to Boise, Idaho from my hometown Eureka, California. I am currently sitting in the San Francisco airport watching airplanes go by. I can’t help but wonder how cool of an experience it is for a pilot to fly some of these huge planes every day. I am hoping this can be me one day. 


Decision

Since late January I have been doing constant research on potential flight schools I could attend in the fall. I narrowed down my decisions to 5 different schools. I have written about these different schools in my previous blogs. The flight school I decided to sign up for and apply to is Silverhawk Aviation Academy located in Caldwell, Idaho. I chose Silverhawk for several different reasons.


Price

One of the biggest factors in deciding to go to Silverhawk was the price. After touring the campus and meeting the owner, I knew I would have the best experience for the price I would be paying for Silverhawk. Silverhawk’s average cost is $75,000. 


Location

Another key reason I decided to apply to Silverhawk is its location. I really like Idaho and I am really happy I am staying at least three more years here. My girlfriend also goes to Boise State so being only 30 minutes away from her is a huge plus. Since Silverhawk is located in Idaho it was nice to be able to tour the school in person and see the facilities before applying to the school.



Reputation

The last key reason I chose to apply to Silverhawk was its reputation. They have been voted Idaho’s best flight school several times in the last decade. They also have a preferred program partnership with SkyWest Regional Airlines which is a great opportunity.


Conclusion

After touring Silverhawk and experiencing the flight school first hand I knew this was the best option for me. I am scheduled to start my training in September. My next blog will go over the key steps I need to take before I can start training in September.

Blog #2: Ascend Pilot Academy

  Introduction In the next several blogs I will be going in-depth and talking about a particular flight school I am considering applying to in April. I am going to be sharing information on the flight school and the requirements it takes to be accepted and apply to the school. The flight school I will be going over to today is Ascend Pilot Academy. Ascend Pilot Academy is a flight school through Alaska and Horizon Airlines. Location and Costs Ascend Pilot Academy has two locations. Hillsboro and Redmond Oregon. Each location provides housing. The housing cost at Redmond is $770 a month and at the Hillsboro location, the housing cost is $1,300. The cost of training will be between $65,000 to $80,000. After you are done getting all of your ratings you can earn a stipend of up to $25,000 to be a flight instructor while you are earning your in-flight hours.
