Blog #4: United Aviate Academy

 Introduction

In this week's blog, I will review The United Aviate Academy. This academy is United Airlines' main pipeline for hiring future pilots for the company. Unlike Destination 225 and Ascend Pilot Academy which are partnered with CAE trading, Aviate has its own training program. This makes it unique compared to other academies. It is also unique because of its in-class schooling, but we will dive more into detail about that later.

Location and Costs

Aviate Academy is located in Goodyear, Arizona. Goodyear Airport provides cadets with industry-leading resources, equipment, and accommodations. The facility is one of only three aviation training campuses in the U.S. The facility covers 28 acres. The facility includes an Administrative and Flight Operations building, cafeteria, dormitories, two aircraft maintenance hangars, a simulator, and a facility maintenance building. Aviate offers on-campus housing ranging from $650 to $750 a month. The total cost of getting your commercial instruments and pilot license is $71,250. This program is cheaper than the last academies we talked about because United does not charge you for your private pilot training.

Timeline

The timeline for the cadet pathway is a total of about three years. It will take 2 months to earn a private pilot license. After getting a private pilot license you will train for 10 months earning all of the commercial ratings and certificates you need to be eligible to fly commercially. The remaining time will be spent gaining 1,500 hours to get to a regional airline.

While in training cadets will be expected to commit to a full-time intensive course of study and flight activity a minimum of 5 days a week.

Requirements

There are several requirements you must have in order to apply to the United Aviate Program:

  • Valid passport allowing unrestricted travel to and from the U.S.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Hold a First Class Medical

  • Ability to work for a variety of schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to communicate in English and authorization to work in the U.S.

  • Little to no flight training experience, experience not exceeding a Private Pilot’s License

Conclusion

The Aviate Academy seems like a great program to go into if you are looking to work for United Airlines one day. They offer a state-of-the-art facility providing everything you need to be successful at becoming an airline pilot one day.  Next week I will be going over the American Airlines pilot program.
