Blog #6: UND Aerospace Phoenix

 Introduction

Hello everyone, I hope your weeks are off to a strong start. This week's blog will be about the University of North Dakota’s Aerospace accelerated flight school program. This program is different from all of the other academies I have talked about in the past. This program is offered through the University of North Dakota. It is not directly tied to an airline. This can be beneficial because they do not make you sign a contract before you start training to work for a certain airline. Once you get your private pilot license, commercial ratings, and 1,500 hours of flight time you can apply to any airline.

Location and Costs

The UND Aerospace accelerated program is located in Phoenix, Arizona. The airport where you will be training as a student is the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. The airport is located in the southwest corner of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The unique desert climate of Arizona provides numerous opportunities to complete flight training ahead of, or on schedule.

The total estimated cost for the program is $99,713.86. These costs consist of private pilot and instrument and commercial training with instructor time, simulation time, flight time, and written exams. The program offers Sallie Mae student loans.

Timeline

The UND Aerospace Phoenix program is a 12-month program. From having zero hours to being a certified flight instructor. The program includes ground school, flight lessons, and all tests required for certification. Student pilots are expected to:

  • Attend five days of ground school training for at least two hours per day and five or six flight lessons per week.

  • Attend all ground school classes (according to FAA regulations).

  • Pass all ground school exams by a minimum of 76% and a minimum overall grade of “C”.

Once a student completes training, UND hires new eligible flight instructors 8 out of 10 times to stay with the school. This allows them the opportunity to stay at the facilities and work for UND Aerospace as they build their flight time.

Requirements

The requirements are basically the same compared to the academies in past blogs. The exact requirements for UND Aerospace are:

  • Have FAA Medical Certificate

  • Have a valid passport or original birth certificate

  • Apply for a Student Pilot Certificate

  • Print and fill out Ramp Badge Application

  • Print and fill out Records Paperwork

  • Obtain UND Aviation Flight Supplies

  • Create eZLMS Account

Conclusion

I found this school because of a recommendation from a current pilot who flies for SouthWest. So I know it is a good program. I have already done a lot of research on the school and contacted them. I am leaning toward going here. Next week I will be going over Silverhawk Aviation Academy. I will list a link below to the UND Aerospace Phoenix website and the link to their Youtube channel.
